BantamOrpington - A Heritage Breed I have two young pure bred Bantam Orpington roosters (cockerels) for sale, in two different colours: one bird is black and the other is blue. $15 each. They are both 4 1/2 months old, male feathers coming through with more to follow. Selling cheaply as their show potential is not yet clear (show standard parents).
Photos don't do justice: the black has full coverage of beautiful green sheen to his feathers and is showing real promise; the 'blue' has the distinctive dark-edged grey feathering in lower body with darker feathers above, the desired character.
This old English breed is a gentle, placid chicken, famous as a traditional utility bird (i.e. good for both meat and laying eggs) and is getting harder to find. The bantam version is larger than many bantams, so good size eggs, but still has the advantage of being less damaging to home gardens (and not as loud).
These boys would be ideal for creating cross-bred bantams with larger egg size and frequency of laying for home use. Or start breeding your own bantam Orpingtons -- females of this heritage breed are in real demand, and regularly sell upwards of $40 per bird! Or sell the fertile eggs (also sought after).
